Phoenix 2012

Back from the TNNA Winter Market which was, as usual, an overwhelming over stimulating experience. I come away with enough ideas to last several years hoping to have time to implement a few before the next show. Things I remember which by no means were "show hi-lights" or the "best things" I saw but things I remember and thought worth sharing. Gloriana is now dyeing with a ribbon comparable to that of River Silk, thank you Anne Frazier. Sundance Designs (who introduced sequins last year) came out with what I think they are calling Sparkles; anyway its this material for needlepoint like nothing else marketing. Its about 1/2 inch in diameter and is transparent though with the sparkle and sheen some colors appear almost opaque. If left as is talk about dimension! Barbara Elmore used it for Robot Arms, pig tails, and festoons above drapery. You can pull it tight, you can iron it flat. If your not familiar with Barbara Elmore I find her to be one of the most creative stitchers out there. I think she left the "box" a really long time ago. Julie Mar has new designers including canvases that are very painterly like a Soutine and a floral one that is creative but without all the shading. Barbara Russell has new canvases that resonate of Pennsylvania history. One of my challenges attending market is remembering I have lots of basketweave customers. The amount of decorate creative stitching abounds but finding good looking canvases that are easy to stitch in basketweave and look beautiful when completed is entirely different than looking at a nothing design that requires thought and skill to turn it into something that is truly remarkable. Conversely taking a real work of art (like a Leigh or Tapestry Tent) and making it even better and a challenge for the stitcher that basketweave could only diminish if not ruin it. Its all about knowing your customers and educating those who are ready. Since I have no eye candy of "new stuff" here are pictures of the pieces I took for classes (click the images to see larger versions).

Storm Flowers by Lois Caron has to be one of the most interesting palette of colors. Cleaning up yesterday I saw the Oriental Silk by TG and thought wow how perfect to consider for the border of Storm Flowers and so it went. Also shown (and will put together the thread kit for sale) Silk lame, Silk by Dream House ventures in an eye bouncing green) Felicity's Garden, Gloriana Hydrangea silk, and lastly a beautiful shade of overdyed Kreinik by Threadworx in a periwinkle.

Then I opened up the 3 new shades of Vineyard classic and one is Electric Orange. Yes! How perfect for the background to one of Lee's cat pieces. And then the dots, well no doubt these would be great using Sundance sequins. And then I couldn't just stop here so I pulled all the colors. One of the most fun things of all to do while my family fumes at home wondering why I'm not home yet.

Unsung Hero

Another favorite canvas designer & artist of mine is Lillian Chermor. She doesn't do shows or much advertising that I know of, so unless your LNS has her items you may not know of her. She paints in oils with very intense color that screams "stitch me in silk please". Some of more hard to find pieces include tea cozy's and coffee pot covers, oven mitts (hopefully for decoration only), teacups and one of my favorites matryoshka dolls (no they don't nest). All but the delft cats I've had are painted on brown canvas. I like brown canvas but know most prefer white. A medium value background is best for showing color and I think you can do a light or dark for the background and not be too concerned about coverage.

A Holiday Skirt fit for a Queen

There are tree skirts and then there is this tree skirt by Leigh Designs. Its not a custom but I've never seen it anywhere else. It features six beautiful and picturesque winter scenes, each roughly 14" wide. Its very lovely and storybook like to me; very much like many other Leigh pieces. I've wondered what it would look like with a 6 or 8 way small scale, all white, bargello/florentine stitch for the background. Or maybe a larger stitch near the perimeter going smaller as you work to the center. Touches of sparkle would be a must! Its hand painted on 13 count canvas, design area is 36" round, overall canvas is 40" x 40". Available in our web store.

The skirt we had in stock sold promptly, but we can order it for you from Leigh. In addition to the 36" round on 13 or 18 count, it is available 48" diameter in 13 or 18 count. Special Occasion Glass Laying Tools

Special occasion can mean perfect for gift giving, a holiday treat for oneself, or as most stitchers agree anytime we sit and stitch we can say, yes today I'm feeling special and want to use all my special tools. These glass laying tools as beautiful as they are also do feel like they want to be picked up and used. Some glass laying tools I've seen look more like a decorative piece, and yes these are most definitely decorative, but they beg to be used. Each tool is entirely hand formed without the use of molds or machinery (sounds like stitching). Each is made of borosilicate glass (same as pyrex) which is stronger and more fracture resistant than typical glass. They are for life. No questions asked, should yours break they may be returned to the artist and repaired. Each comes with a hard case for storage / travel. They are like eye candy. I know for many they seem like an extreme luxury however when you use something so beautiful you address your stitching with special care which often leads to greater pleasure while we stitch.

Patty brought in her two pilgrim children, by Melissa Shirley, to show me today. What timing. They are charming and I hope every shop owner has atleast one Patty for a customer. Every project she approaches with a freshness and to labor over any detail just isn't in her. Girls apron is done in Ginnie Thompson linen (yes its been in the shop for a l o n g time) Edmar boucle for the hair, bright orange Trebizond for the pumpkins and oh so soft Renaissance Dyeing crewel weight lambs wool for the clothing. Since Patty is a descendent of the pilgrims these pieces will be treasured by Patty's grand daughter.

After a full day of eating we will all want to look as peaceful as Amanda Lawfords owl ornament. A thread kit is available seperately as shown.

"Healing Sutras" Erin Endicott October 29th

Hoping that I too can partake in the workshop with Erin. Looking around the house for possible "subjects" I came across old items of mine that for the most part have some sentimental value to me. I should hope so otherwise one of sound mind would have to question why I still have these dirty rags hanging around.

a) Silk knit camisole with beautiful lace. Bought in the mid-80's for alot of money, more than I would pay for a blouse today.

b) Matryoshka doll linen dish towel. Brought back from Russia as a gift. What can I say? I love linen, I love dolls, I love Matryoshka dolls, and I like the proportion of the towel. But it doesn't look nice enough to be used any more for its intended purpose. This past week I sold a Matryoshka doll canvas by Lillian Chermor to a lovely customer who has a fondness for russian architecture and items. One day I hope to do a blog post about Lillian Chermor, I just have an affinity for her designs, style and use of color.

c) small doily. No personal meaning, but something small and sweet. It never took up enough room in a drawer to warrant tossing.

d) a rather old cotton blouse that I bought from Peruvian Connection, dare I say, almost 25 years ago? I wore it to so many places back when I had money and time for travel. Had an interesting exchange in Berlin, Germany, with a woman from Peru in a public bathroom of all places. We couldn't talk to each other but she recognized something familiar about this blouse, I think it had something to do with the weave. The whole thing was so out of context for both of us that the memory has stayed with me.

Contemporary Embroidery Class

Onward now to October and a very special and unique workshop with another artist, Erin Endicott. Both Sharon and Erin bring beauty with a threaded needle yet the process is quite different. I first learned about Erin at an exhibit at Perkins Center for the Arts in 2010. Its contemporary, its organic and its beautiful. One of the things that strikes me about Erin's work is her technique. One can find many examples of contemporary embroidery on the internet, many are about shock value or the indie aesthetic. But what I see to often reminds me of "ok" writing lacking any polish or command of the english language as if it doesn't really matter any more. Look at Erin's work and her "language" per se or technique is impeccable. A refreshing emphasis on work that is beautifully executed, with evidence of thought and care put into the process.

“Healing Sutras: Embroidery as a Meditative Practice”

This workshop by contemporary embroidery artist Erin Endicott will lead you on an exploration into using hand embroidery as a way to relax, unwind and release negative emotion. You will experience the cathartic effects of hand dyeing and hand sewing on the fabrics of your choice. We will work intuitively with pattern, line and mark making to create beautiful and powerful works of art.

Skill level: Open to all skill levels – from those who have never sewn a stitch to the most accomplished.

Materials: Bring your own "fabric something" that holds personal meaning. This could be, but not limited to: Old clothing (wedding dresses or swatches from them), baby clothes,; lace or doilies; old hankies, favorite old t-shirt; old pillowcase, napkin or placemat; silk or cotton scarf. Feel free to bring a piece or fragment for your "fabric something". Because we encourage the use of something with meaning this comes with the understanding that it may not be in like "new condition" so don't worry about marks, holes, tears etc.

Supplementary Materials: Bring your stitching necessities: needles, sharp scissors, a hoop and magnification if your used to it. If your a newbie not to worry all of these materials are available for sale at the workshop and need not be bought in advance. You may also bring various threads, beads or embellishments. Of course these will all be available at the workshop too.

Teaching Fee: $35.00 Registration deadline October 22, 2011. Class size limited to 10 students.

Last Saturday we were blessed with Sharon G and her all her talents. Knowledge of threads, use of threads, beads, metallics and most of all stitches. We won't even go into her artistic talent. One of the many special things about Sharon is the vast majority of her line is her own artwork. What an accomplishment! But it only gets better with how she brings a canvas to life. Great fun was had by all and we look forward to scheduling a date in early November with her. If interested please contact me to be put on the list! You may bring a canvas, buy a canvas, or buy a canvas from SharonG. Cost for the class is $75. 9:30 to 4:30 with a break for lunch. I can't guarantee Missy's home baked cinnamon buns. They were fresh and delicious. Linda was smart for coming with room to fully enjoy.

Because I think so highly of Sharon's stitching I invited several customers to stop in while she's here so they can see her work. Judging from pictures isn't nearly enough. This being said, what did my drop-ins go crazy over. No not her gorgeous landscapes or lovely still lifes. They went head over heals for her horses hiney's. Seeing is believing.

Travel project dilema?

Does anyone else stress over what project makes the most sense to travel with? Going on an overnight trip with my daughter with time to stitch on the bus and for an overnight. What if I have 30 minutes or an little time here and there? I could be getting some stitching done! Lots of projects I'd like to take but they're just a tad too big. I could think of several little projects to start but they're at the shop and not here at home; departure is in 7 hours. I open drawers and cabinets look here and there in this pile and on this shelf. Oh my, I astonished at how many projects have been started and then there are the ones I completely forgot about. And the ones where I'd probably rather day dream than pretend to have interest in working on. So I've settled on the small cuff by Orna Willis, started in 2007. Almost seems feasible to finish on this trip. My fear like with so many other projects is I see things I don't like and want to change. Like the use of the petite red beads. No problem I can take those out and replace with something nicer. I see the pattern coming another project that gets 95% done and then it goes into purgatory. So many, so close to being finished. But isn't really about the process after all?

Mostly for sparkly snow my customers are happy with Petite Sparkle Rays PS21, as some recall the one that we spent a month plus waiting anxiously for a few a few weeks ago. Then there are some who don't like having to deal with it twisting on them and then I steer them over to Kreinik knowing that 032 looks like day old snow in comparison to PS-21. But victory came this summer when Kreinik introduced the candy colors. #5760 Marshmallow is a great snow white. Shown below is #032 side by side with the newer #5760.

A Traditional but non-traditional Baby Sampler

I like the idea of the rabbit toile for a baby sampler. It can work in many decor's (heaven forbid it not fit the theme) its sophisticated but "useful" too. Many baby samplers are not well designed and are obviously about letters and numbers without being attractive . I like this one as it is a well designed piece artistically and yet its "educational" too. A fun way to personalize would be to stitch the letters or initials of the child's name in a different color. Canvas and threads including 6 skeins of silk n' ivory and one Fancy Fur (have to have the few white bunnies be fuzzy) all for just $105.00. After July 26th, price goes back to full retail at $131.50 Design area is 7.5 x 11", good as a small pillow or a wall hanging.

Another completed piece from my customer who didn't fall in love with it upon completion. From Lavender and Lace #40 "White Lace". Stitched on 32 count linen with the face done 1 over 1. Linen may be what is suggested by designer, it is a very pale muted blue grey. It feels like a Wichelt linen vs. Zweigart Belfast. If you don't love the full gown it would still be lovely framed from the bouquet up. Overall stitched area is 19 3/8" x 8". If interested it will be auctioned on ebay. A rare opportunity to buy a stitched Rebecca Wood stocking. Stitched all except for the name. Where did this come from? A customer purchased the canvas and threads from another shop that included a stitch guide. I sent it out to be stitched and its too fancy now for my customers taste. Just a reminder the Trunk show continues through July 25th. and includes the whole line. We've seen a peek at the Halloween, florals, funky animals and now a glance at the stocking collection. I think at a glance we often assume all of Birds of a Feather is contemporary, or graphic and has limiting appeal. But if you look, particularly at the stockings, you can see there is a diversity of style. While many can be romanced by stockings with lots of lovely detailing these can quickly become one of the most challenging of projects. But with Birds of a Feather while some like the vintage style ones have more detail all of her canvases are stitch painted. While you can change the colors there is no guess work. They can only get better looking once stitched. If you like to do basketweave these are the stockings for you. Stockings with lots of shading require lots of guess work if your going to do a tent stitch and in my opinion do not look as appealing once stitched in this way because you loose the subtlety and the result can be very blotchy. A canvas that is stitch painted and done in all tent stitching is typically only enhanced with the use of vibrant threads.

Licorice Allsorts to stitch! These are kits I can order for you. The round piece is "Licorice Gobelin Kit". It measures 4.5 " x 4.5", it appears round does it not? $24. includes needlepoint canvas, danish "Flora" 100% wool and chart. Second piece measures 5" x 14" (pillow not included). This kit is $49. Both are done on canvas in a fine weight wool and are cross stitched, not tent or continental. Designed by Pelse AsboIf, kits come from Denmark. I wish they came with a supply of Allsorts for the life of the piece.

Liquorice allsorts (also spelled licorice allsorts) consist of a variety of liquorice sold as a mixture. These confections are made of liquorice, sugar, coconut, aniseed jelly, fruit flavourings, and gelatine. They were first produced in Sheffield, England, by Geo. Bassett & Co Ltd who had taken over Wilkinsons (Pontefract cakes/mushrooms), Barratts (sherbet fountains/sweet cigarettes) and Trebor (mints) before being taken over themselves by the Cadbury's consortium). Allsorts are produced by many companies around the world today, and are most popular in Britain, continental Europe, and North America.

A Day with Sharon G

Yesterday was a special day at the shop. Sharon IMO is an excellent teacher and think everyone left happy with much gained in their knowledge about stitching on canvas. I'm sad for anyone who has never seen a completed canvas stitched by Sharon. The difference between seeing a stitched piece of hers in a picture vs. real life is like the difference between black & white vs color. Her use of metallics and beads, scale of the stitches and composition are all too be greatly admired. Amongst the students were the NY Stitching Sisters and I am grateful they came as some of my customers were less than aware of what a needlepoint addict is! Not to mention Denise's sense of humor and kindness she spreads. Denise troubled herself to bring four framed pieces from Sharon's line based on photo graphs Denise took in Ponzo Italy. They are below and are exquisite beyond words, I've posted a picture from her blog. Several have stitch guides available. Thank you to Denise, Linda, Karen, Cliff (yes we had a man amongst us) Ruth, Lynn, Joanne and Carol for attending.

One very positive outcome of yesterday is that I would like to have Sharon return for embellishment classes. I'll work up some dates and accept registration on a first come basis. Now everyone can have a chance to learn from a leader in the needlearts. If your interested now, don't wait for me! Seeing all there is to see makes me wish I could purge all my old stuff and buy up everything that strikes my fancy. There is always a lot to cover in walking a show and though several designers didn't exhibit I still didn't get to visit all that I planned. Of course having a fever and feeling not so great slowed me down a bit! I think of shows as a time for intense information gathering of checking out the lines I know but also learning about designers I'm less familiar with. Below are some things that were either new, like Raymond Crawford adding judaic to his line, or atleast new to me.

Hip belts, meant to sit on your hips. Really interesting and versatile in patterns so you can wear them with all sorts of colors. These belts are for those who thought all needlepoint belts were "preppy". Tangerine Twist

Thanks Miriam for sending me a progress picture of Needle Delights Tangerine Twist. Lots of interest lately in the shop with charted work. I really like the designs of Needle Delights; excellent charts, great sense of color and plenty of stitches. Compared to other charted work I find there are more stitches than meets the eye. Piece below was done using waterlillies and not watercolours as per the chart. Customer likes how laying stranded silk looks in comparison to the softer look of watercolours. I have to agree that I like the look better too but respect the designer charting for watercolours as to not intimidate a less skilled needleworker not to mention the lower price overall. Word of caution not all watercolours are available in waterlillies, for this piece there was only one pale yellow that we needed to substitute

Needlework Box

Just in is this exquisite leather box lined in silk by no other than Marlene's. The canvas is by Lillian Chermor. A designer I've been wanting to post about for some time. Lillian has few equals when it comes to color intensity. When showing this to customers they can't believe that this is a box from scratch, no one just pulled it off the shelf and covered it in leather with a padded needlepoint top. So pleased that the tone of the leather is a perfect match to the subtle blue in the background. Fish was stitched in Vineyard Silk with the background stitched in Gumnut Stars.

Congratulations to Lynn for successfully finishing her bowl in just a few months. Lynn is coming up on her one year anniversary of learning to needlepoint. Amazing, and if you can't tell there's alot of french knots for the berries. We think Lynn was a stitcher in her former life. She loves doing french knots and is one of those rare stitchers who insists on perfecting her stitch on a doodle cloth before threading up for the real thing. If I recall this piece is stitched in vineyard silks with the background in silk n' ivory. It is one 13 count canvas and will be so special once framed and hanging in her home. Stay tuned as I may want to post her progress on her next piece by Ewe & Eye "lovenest".

UFO by Simon Hart

I've had this piece for longer than I expected. I thought it was a great alternative for a boys room instead of sports or animals. Maybe it just shows my age when space exploration used to be so cool and futuristic before the age of computers. Then when I was pulling threads for it the other day customers said they always thought it was an odd looking fish. Time for this UFO to fly before the eyes of other stitchers. Personalize it with someones name in a funky Jetson like typeface.

The Anticipation

Finally today the Sundance beads arrived for the class. Easier to love beads with canvas when your working with Sundance beads. As you can see many different shades and types of gold threads. When you have metallic gold on a canvas do you think about using multiple golds? instead of just going for your favorite? Here we will use different shades of gold as well as several different types including blending filament, cord, size 4 and 12 braids, 1/16th inch ribbon, and japan thread. Personally I love how the ribbons lie whether it be from Kreinik, Fyre Werks soft sheen or Treasure Braid ribbon just to name a few. No thickness or bulk and plenty of shine.

Love at First Sight

Today I received two of the pagoda designs released in January by Leigh. They are truly beautiful. Each is 11" x 14" on sage green canvas, 18 count and $195.00 each. One is Hall of the Sacred Bells, other Pavilion of the Great Sea. Once again these are interesting in that there is a definite foreground and background helping one give some structure to stitch selections.

This canvas by artist Janet Watson is published by Fleur de Paris. Its inspired by the Bloomsbury Group, part of the arts and crafts movement that included a number of painters and designers who had an important influence on the visual and decorative arts during the period of English modernism (1905—1930).

Its stitch painted on 13 count canvas, overall design area is 11" x 11", and the thread kit is available as a separate item.

Happy to post some new items offered in the web store today. Julie Mar's Elegant Lady canvas previously posted disappeared like lightning, but we also have the Elegant Lady Detail canvas, which is a smaller piece, a close-up of our favorite lady's face.

And we also have this beautiful little Thistle canvas from Melissa Shirley. We've prepped a thread kit for this one as well because we can't resist when we see threads so perfect for this canvas.

Keep it Clipped

In my never ending quest to keep organized I ordered this clip board from Cooper Oaks. It just so happens it fit a canvas I had from Le Espirit de France that was intended to be a bracelet. Together they are terrific duo. For now the canvas is just folded up and inserted but once stitched it can be more vibrant. Clip Board takes an 8 1/2x 11" tablet, or paper (as shown) and the cost is $18.00. A canvas strip 2 1/4" x 8 7/8" will fit perfectly. The floral canvas from Le Espirit de France as shown is $43.00 (originally $65.00) and can be purchased with clip board or on its own including the finishing form to make into a sizeable bracelet. Hand painted on 18 count canvas.

Sharon G Dragonfly Class Saturday June 25th

I'm very excited to announce Sharon Garmize (Sharon G) will be coming to teach her new Dragonfly piece for an all day class on Saturday June 25th. More details to follow but here's some basics: Cost $250.00 includes canvas, stitch guide, thread kit and teaching fee. The Registration Form can be returned by fax, email or snail mail.

Its sure to be a day to remember with Sharon's stitching expertise, a lovely new design using several Gloriana 12 ply stranded silk in undeniably Gloriana colors, Kreinik Japan threads beyond silver and gold as well as Kreinik braids, cords and ribbon and Sundance beads to make the piece really become a work of art.

Woodlawn Needlework Exhibit March 2011

I received my items back from Woodlawn the other day and quite to my surprise I received some ribbons! Jean Krynicki from River Silks was kind enough to drop me a note mentioning she had seen my piece with ribbon receive an honorable mention and it did get me wondering... So the moral of the story is don't be shy and think what you do may not be up to snuff to enter in 2012. Just do it and see what happens. Compared to what I see in finished needlepoint that comes into my shop and out there in cyberspace much is superior compared to my entries. I wish I had been able to go but its a heck of a day trip from Haddonfield and with the move it wasn't possible, but there is always next year! Congratulations to all who sent something to show for the 48th Annual Needlework Exhibition.

Rabbits, Bunnies and Hares Oh My

With Easter now upon us I wanted to share a few Hares. Here is Beth Russell's classic Hare from her William Morris collection. A big thank you to all who came out for our Ribbon Cutting and Storewide Sale. Rosanna Gelpi-Houck from DMC was there demonstrating DMC Memory Thread for customers, and many regulars who we've not seen since the move came out for the event. Mayor Colombi of Haddonfield, the town where we are now located, came out and officiated cutting the ribbon like a pro. We may have rekindled her interest in stitching, and so we primed her with a canvas of a happy snowman decked out in a Haddonfield sweater! The canvas was a Julie Mar piece, and if you like it let us know, as we can have one made up with your favorite town or team logo.

Modigliani-esque

New this year, 2011, from Julie Mar Designs, comes the first in her introductions of elegant women. I think it's her neck that just reminds me so much of Amadeo Modigliani, one of my favorite portrait artists. I also like the starfish like flowers in her hat with sea like colors in the background. She is on 14 count canvas, 14.25" wide x 16.5" high.

Needlepoint scissor case

Needlepoint scissor cases may not be as popular as they once were so I'm offering this lovely case from Amanda Lawford at a 25% discount. Cases are fast to stitch up and nice because you can always stop and admire your work while your stitching and its useful, not another pillow. Gives you a chance to show off your work to stitching friends too. The finisher I use does such a beautiful job that will make you proud to bring out your case at every stitch-in. Hard protection is used between needlepoint and lining so you can't poke the scissors through the canvas. Custom cording and added bling if you like. Chrysanthemum case by Amanda Lawford was 62.00 now just $46.50. Also available is the North Garden case by Julie Mar for $46.00. This one calls for a little ribbon embroidery.

Ok, now that everyones invited to Come, Shop and Save I have to backup a bit since I think some customers aren't aware the Nimble Needle has moved! After 30 plus years in Moorestown the shop has moved to a nearby town of Haddonfield, NJ. The two past store locations have only been barely adequate in terms of a retail location and I knew in order to keep the business healthy and serve my customers better I had to find a larger place. While I looked to stay in Moorestown everyplace I found had a drawbacks so my search continued. It is purely by chance that I found 50 Tanner Street, Haddonfield NJ, and it has several advantages over other towns not to mention the space is just right for a small needlework shop. I have nearly twice the space, a prominent storefront presence providing plenty of natural light, no steps upon entering, ample off street parking, easy access from Philadelphia via Patco and more. Haddonfield is an exceptional town in terms of a walking historic town with thriving retail. The Partnership for Haddonfield sponsors monthly town wide events to support all the businesses. Most notably First Fridays and the Annual juried Craft Fair in July and yes Ribbon Cuttings for all new businesses. The support is enormous and I couldn't ask for a better community to be a part of. To set the record straight the only location for the shop is in Haddonfield, I did not buy out another business and I don't live in Haddonfield nor Moorestown. Sales on my internet store (www.thenimbleneedle.com) and my ebay store have continued to grow and I now have a whole online customer base from the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Once and a while I get a distant customer dropping in which is such nice experience for me and wish my other customers from afar could come and spend a day in the shop to get the full Nimble Needle culture! I am ever so grateful for my regulars from near and far that support my efforts and keep me learning too. Ok, no more talking lets just pick up a needle and get stitching!
